Situated in south-western Uganda at the border of Uganda and Rwanda, between the districts of Kabale and Kisoro, Lake Bunyonyi is believed to be the second deepest lake in Africa with its deepest end approximately at 900m. The lake is dotted with 29 islands, with the most prominent of these including the Akampene Island also known as the punishment island, Bushara, Kyahugye, Bwama and Njuyeera, and Bucuranuka.

The deepest lake in Uganda, is also home of Otters, crayfish and a place of many little birds, from which it derives its name Lake Bunyonyi, (‘Place of many little birds’). These little birds skim and splash over the waters in absolute harmony. Others paddle on the surface or streak into the air and begin mock flights amidst loud screeches. Other wildlife in the vicinity is less noisy, but just as captivating beside the placid lake.

You can always take a canoe and hop around the different islands around Lake Bunyonyi, with over 29 islands that give the whole area a magical effect intensified by the overwhelming shades of rich green and breathtaking scenic views.

The lake is reputed to be one of the deepest in Africa, and caution is always taken by the captains taking visitors around. The waters are placid and ripple softly whenever the utter of bird wings disturbs the surface.

Birding and Wildlife at Lake Bunyonyi
Since it derives its name from ‘small birds’, it’s always common to find them flying over the lake and in the neighborhood. Birders interested in viewing small bird species can always find comfort in this area. From Pied Wagtail to weaver birds, grey crowned crane and Greater comorants among others.

The birds may rule in terms of the racket they sometimes make, but you’ll always find other wildlife on selected islands like Kyahugye, including; waterbucks, zebras and kobs.
